name sense
I’m really amused with Japanese names. It’s like every character represent something about that person (or am I just thinking too much). I feel like it’s been carefully thought out. And I do believe Ms. Amano had taken her time choosing their name because I think it fits them perfectly. And I’m not complaining even one tiny bit.
According to this post (by Sophie) Tsuna’s name means this:
Sawada "Tsuna" Tsunayoshi
沢田「ツナ」綱吉
Sawada: "stream" or "wetlands" / "rice patty"
Tsunayoshi: "main point" or "rope" / "lucky" or "good"
As a whole: "dependable"
Note: "Tsuna" can be interpreted as "tuna," as in the delicious fish.
Not that I’m saying that either "rice patty" or "rope" had something to do with Tsuna (literally speaking, it doesn’t). But when both his first and last name is combined which means "dependable" I think it does make a point. Tsuna is a leader thus – he is dependable (no matter how loser he is from the start).
Well, as for the tuna, I did try to connect him somehow. I guess it is just a pun because I get nothing no matter how much I think. Maybe it just coincidentally sound like Tsuna and that’s all there is.
mr. shogun is that you?
According to some speculation, Tsuna got his name after the fifth shogun of the Tokugawa dynasty of Japan, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. He is known for establishing law on animal protection law especially for dogs and with this he got the nickname of "dog shogun". He ruled Japan from 1680 to 1709. He is the Successor of Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, his father. If you’ve notice, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi father’s name also bears the same name of Sawada Tsuna’s father, Sawada Ietmitsu. While Iemitsu’s father is name Ietsuna (the name has the word “Tsuna” on it).
In the series Ietsuna Sawada is the father of Ietmitsu, making him Tsuna's grandfather in his father side.
In Japanese history, Ietsuna is the older brother of Tsunayoshi Tokugawa. (please refer here for the family tree)
This is just some speculation that maybe Amano Akira might have gotten his and his father’s name from the Tokugawa family, although this assumption hasn’t verified by Amano herself.
khr numerology: 27
Fans used the number “27” to signify his character. Japanese pronounce the number two (2) like “tsu” since Japanese doesn't have the 'tw' sound so it becomes a 'ts'. While the number seven (7) as “nana” thus “tsu-na.”(*).
